Rain drowned out the people from the streets as they ran into buildings. Whether it was their home or not was another matter entirely. Not that he cared at all. He was sitting in a patio chair. An umbrella hung over his head as he drank his tea.
He was thinking about what he should for his new assignment. He watched as the civilians ran around helplessly in the rain. He sighed as he finished his cup of tea. He left a tip as he got up and pulled out his umbrella and left the area.
You ran into your house and sighed in relief. It's been raining a lot lately. It was expected since you lived in London, England. Rain was common but it's been raining like this since Madam Red had died. Your family was saddened by her untimely death.
Your family was part of the Queen's Court and controlled several tobacco industries in Australia. Your mother was in charge of all of them. She was also really close with the Queen herself. You were always walking around in the Royal Garden and having tea with Her Majesty as well.
Your mother was training you to take over the family business. Your father had taken over it until he died a couple of years ago. So your mother had taken over the business. Which was a profitable endeavor, your family hasn't this much income in a couple of generations.
Right now, you were getting ready for tea with your mother. So you sat in the piano room and started to read a book. A maid came running in the room.
"Mistress [name], Milady won't be coming for tea today." She blushed.
"Why's that?" You smiled.
"Milady is meeting with Lord Phantomhive for a business deal." She said. You gripped your book until your knuckles turned white.
"That's all right. Thank you for telling me." You said, with the smile still on your face. The maid heard the edge in your voice and jumped. She curtsied and ran out of the room.
Phantomhive? We're going to do a business deal with that little brat?! You thought angrily. You had more hatred for the Phantomhives than anything else in the world. To you, he did nothing but con people out of their money just to expand his childish games. He never took anything, unless he was interested in it, seriously.
As you mused over what your mother could want from him, another maid came in and delivered you your tea. You looked over at her, mood shifting completely. You grinned as she kindly left and poured yourself tea. You tried to enjoy the rest of the afternoon without any disturbance of the word Phantomhive.
A man stood in front of a pair of gates. His clothes were wet and his umbrella looked ready to give into the rain. He sighed and managed to open the gates with ease. He looked at the house in disdain. He sighed as he entered the mansion.
"Will~!" Someone cheered.
"What do you want, Grell?" He sighed.
"Come one, Will darling~! Is that how you greet me~?" The eccentric man cooed.
"I'm busy, why don't you go annoy that beast?" Will said, agitated.
"Because he's busy playing butler with his master~." The man frowned.
Will sighed and began to walk up the hill. Grell jumped in surprised and tore after the man. He jumped in front of him to try and stop him.
"Come on, darling~," Grell grinned, "can't we go and have some fun~? It's always work with you~."
"Mr. Sutcliff, honestly..." Will said with finality as he pushed his glasses up onto his noise once more.
He stared at Grell. Grell wavered and lost his confidence. Will walked past him without another word. He trudged up the hill and stopped in front of the mansion's front door. Grell watched as his friend walked off.
"Mistress, there is someone here to see you!" A maid called.
"What's their name?" You asked, sipping your tea. The maid entered the room with a well-dressed man.
"My name is William T. Spears at your service, My Lady." The man said and bowed in response. You nodded your head in acknowledgement.
"A pleasure to meet you Mr. Spears, but it would be my mother that deserves that title." You grinned. "Please join me for tea." You gestured towards the empty chair across from you. "My mother is busy with business and I could use the company." He nodded and sat down. The maid quickly poured tea for him.
You watched as he remained in a uniform posture as he sat down. He looked like something from a fairy tale. His hair was combed back and parted in the middle. His glasses sat upon his pale skin which almost resembled that of the finest porcelain that could be made. He wore a black suit with a matching tie. You felt a grin run across your face as you became in love with the man. What you loved most, was his unique eye color. It was a yellow-green, something odd, but it was interesting nonetheless.
"So, Mr. Spears," You said after the maid had left, "how can I be of service to you?"
He watched your fake smile curling upon your lips. He watched as you picked up your cup of tea and drank from it. He shifted his gaze to looking around the room. It looked like something expected from a noble.
Expensive paintings hung on the wall, asking for unneeded attention. Bookcases were arranged in an acceptable fashion for any welcomed guest. Even the piano looked like something that was imported from a foreign country. There were flowers that decorated the tables and anything else that wasn't covered in fine cloths or silks. He returned his attention to you.
"I am a Grim Reaper and you are about to die in the near future." He said. You froze in fear. You dropped your tea onto the floor.
"E-excuse me?" You stuttered. Surely, this must be a joke. You thought to yourself.
"I'm afraid not." He said as he readjusted his glasses. "I am from the Management Division of the Grim Reaper Dispatch and I have been called out on this mission."
You examined his features carefully. He stared at you, unfazed by your unease and terror. He picked up his book and opened it.
"Your family has been known for having untimely deaths, your father being one of them." He started. "He died from a fatal heart attack and then your mother took over the family business."
You stared at him with a bewildered look. Nobody knew about the sickness on your father's side of the family. You watched as he carelessly looked back at you.
You felt a sharp pain in your heart. You fell over and screamed in pain. William stood up and blocked the door with something. You shut your eyes and curled up into a ball.
"In short, Miss [name], I am here to reap your soul." He said. He took out something and held it in his hand. You felt something strike your chest.
William watched as your life unraveled before his eyes. He saw you when you were happy as a child and playing with your friends. A certain blue haired boy stood out as well. As time progressed he watched as you grew older. He took in the pain you had when your father had passed away and how you told your mother you were going to revolutionize the tobacco industry when you became in charge of the family business.
Then he watched as you became a straight 'A' student in school. You received nothing lower than an '-A'. Everyone in your family was both happy and surprised at your sudden determination and rapid improvements. It didn't stop there either, you had met Madam Red and she became enthralled in what you were doing. So one day, she decided to help you with charity funds and stuff of the like.
As William watched these memories, he felt confused. Why the sudden change in attitude about how a tobacco industry should be manned? He tried to analyze the facts through your memories and then he came to a partial realization when he Madam Red's funeral.
You stood next to a blue haired boy. The both of you never uttered a word as you stood in your fine arraignments. Rain was falling from the sky once more. He glimpsed over at you with his bright blue eye. You ignored him and stared sullenly at Madam Red's grave.
She was one of your closest friends and was dear to your heart. You remembered how she always had Grell at her side, which he was usually making a mess of something. You thought nothing of it and considered it something of a personal trait to Madam Red herself.
"And now the dawn's light casts a shadow upon a once great Madam." The boy muttered. You nodded in agreement. Madam Red had done so much to help you. And since your father died, it was time you used your newly found abilities and apply them in the business world; a world full of traps and cons.
"You should, Lord Phantomhive," You began, "if I were you, I'd reconsider how close your friends are from now on. Your beloved butler won't always be there for you."
The boy gave you a dark glare. His butler twitched from the remark, but realized it was true nonetheless. You looked up into the dreary sky and sighed.
"Mistress [name]," The boy's butler started, "I believe you should take your own advice to heart."
"Considering yours is as rotten as an apple." The boy finished with a bitter bite. You looked over to him in surprise as he began to walk away.
"Believe it or not, Ceil. I will make my family's industry one worth mentioning. It will be well-known as throughout the entirety of our beloved empire." You said. He stopped and his butler craned his neck to see you through his devilish eyes.
"Medicine will prove to be a mighty asset as it always will. Toys will always be something considered to be childish. No matter how well known your name is, it is always the better product that Her Majesty will favor." You left the gravesite and Ceil began to fume with anger.
"Do not fret, young master." His butler grinned. "Mistress [name] will be as well-known as you, maybe even greater since she has a cause worth fighting for."
"I'll never understand women." Ceil barked as he began to walk off.
William felt surprised at your determination. Something was still missing though. How would you accomplish this if you weren't going to survive the next few minutes? He flipped through the pages of his book and skimmed through the important facts of your life.
You tried to look around the room but say nothing but blurred vision as you wallowed in pain. Why haven't the maids come? Can they not hear me? You thought as you tried to breath. You felt something strange once more. You slowly regained consciousness.
"Mistress [name], why are you determined to change the traditional ways that have been passed down in your family for generations?" William asked.
"B-because I want to make sure that one day," You started, trying to regain your breathe, "no matter how it maybe in the future, one day my family will be rid of this burden that we carry. My father wanted to do the same but realized it too soon." You looked to the floor with sadness. William continued to stare at you as you tried to think.
"I promised on my father's deathbed and Madam Red's grave that I would help people rather than kill them." You looked him straight in those entrancing yellow-green eyes. He looked at your determined [eye color] eyes and tried to make your final decision waver. He looked down and you swore you saw a grin.
"Mistress [name], it is my duty to proudly say that I may have been mistaken about what I came here to do." He said dutifully and bowed. He held out his hand to you. You grabbed it and he helped you to your feet. He helped you into your chair as you tried to calm down.
"Mr. Spears…" You started.
"Mistress, I would rather you call me William." He corrected.
"Very well, William, may I ask you something?" You smiled. He looked at you in response. "I would want to know if you would like to come by again. Hopefully, we can reacquaint ourselves better."
"I don't think that would be ve-"
"I don't want to hear of it. My mother is a financial investor and hardly has time for me anymore. Besides," You said with a blush, "I would always appreciate the company. And I promise that I will remember what you have done for my family and for me."
When you looked at William again, you could've sworn that smile was there. He stood up and excused himself from the room. A maid clambered into the room after he had left.
"Mistress, are you all right?!" She asked as you picked up another cup of tea.
"Yes, I am. I think I just made a new friend today." You grinned.
William looked up to the sky and noticed the rain had stopped. He held his umbrella close to him as he walked down the hill and to the gate. Once again, he was ambushed by the noisy red head.
"So~." Grell grinned.
"What do you want now, Mr. Sutcliff?" William asked, he tone had a hint of annoyance.
"Will has a girlfriend~!" The flamboyant red head sang.
"Honestly, Mr. Sutcliff," William started as he pushed his glasses up once more, "just go find that beast and annoy him."
Grell was about to say something but realized William had walked off before he could say it. He looked around him and chased after him once more.
You watched as William and the red head ran off in the distance. You smiled when you realized that this chance encounter would change your life forever. You picked up your medical book once more and returned to your daily life. William visited every now and then of course, but a daily routine nonetheless.
